Surviving (and Thriving!) with Multiple Cats
The Multi Cat Household Guide: Keeping the peace and your sanity when living with multiple cats. It CAN be done. Follow our guide to peaceful coexistence.
by Rita Reimers, Multi Cat Behavior Expert

You’ve decided to have more than one cat. Congratulations! You’ve officially leveled up in the game of feline companionship. While single-cat life has its perks, nothing beats the chaos, comedy, and cuddles of a multi-cat household.
But let’s be honest—living with multiple cats isn’t all synchronized purring and Instagram-worthy group naps. It’s also territorial tiffs, litter box logistics, and a constant battle for the best sunbeam real estate.
As seasoned cat behaviorists at Cat Behavior Alliance, Linda and I have seen it all—cats who bond like lifelong besties and others who hold grudges longer than an angry toddler. But don’t worry, with the right setup, a little patience, and a lot of cat treats, your feline family can coexist peacefully.
NOTE: Linda has 12 cats of the sanctuary cats and I have 18 who all live together in (relative) peace! We live this, so we understand. Here’s how we achieved peaceful coexistence. This is why we created the guide to multi-cat households.
The Feline Social Code: It’s Complicated

Cats are social creatures—just on their own terms. Some cats embrace the roommate lifestyle of a multi-cat household, while others believe they should be the sole ruler of the household. Understanding their natural instincts is key:
- Hierarchy Happens – Even if your cats are the same age, size, and adopted on the same day, one of them will inevitably decide they’re in charge. (Spoiler: It’s usually the one who wins the couch.)
- Personal Space Matters – Unlike dogs, cats don’t believe in forced friendships. Let them establish boundaries naturally.
- Territory Wars are Real – Cats divvy up your home like it’s a feline real estate market. Expect minor disputes over prime napping spots, favorite window perches, and, of course, your lap.
Peacekeeping Tips for a Happy Multi-Cat Home
1. Litter Box Logistics: The Golden Rule (+1)
When it comes to litter boxes, more is better. The ideal formula? One litter box per cat, plus one extra. This ensures everyone has a clean, stress-free place to do their business. If your cats are having litter box battles, the problem isn’t them—it’s you (or, rather, your setup).
Litter box placement matters, too. At least one box should be on each floor of your home in a place that is easy for your cats to find.
2. Double the Food, Double the Fun (and the Drama)

Nothing sparks sibling rivalry like meal time. To avoid mealtime meltdowns:
- Separate feeding stations if your cats tend to argue over food.
- Consider puzzle feeders to slow down the ones who inhale their meals like they’re in an eating contest.
- Monitor food-stealing bandits. (Looking at you, sneaky tabbies!)
3. Vertical Space: The Secret to Multi-Cat Household Harmony
Cats love to climb, and the more perches, shelves, and cat trees you have, the less likely they are to fight over ground territory.
Think of it like building a second floor for your feline tenants—more room, less drama.
4. Playtime: The Great Equalizer
Regular play sessions help release pent-up energy and redirect any sneaky aggression into something productive (like chasing a wand toy instead of each other).
PRO TIP: It helps you bond with your cats and keeps them mentally and physically healthy.
5. Rescue Remedy & Chill
If tensions run high, a few drops of Rescue Remedy for Cats in their water or on a treat can help take the edge off. This natural flower essence blend is designed to ease stress and promote relaxation without making your cats groggy.
Think of it as a little zen in a bottle—helping your feline crew coexist with fewer dramatic standoffs.
6. Patience and the Multi-Cat Household
If you’re introducing a new cat to the mix, take it slow. The “slow introduction method” (separating them at first, swapping scents, gradual meetings) prevents full-blown turf wars. Remember, your existing cat sees the newcomer as an uninvited guest in their palace—so make sure to play referee.

The Joys of a Multi-Cat Home
Yes, it can be chaotic. Yes, they’ll still knock things off shelves, conspire against you at 3 AM, and ignore you when you call them. But the rewards? Worth it.
- Double (or triple) the love!
- Hilarious interactions you could never script.
- Built-in entertainment—forget Netflix, cat drama is where it’s at.
- Watching them groom each other (heart-melting)… until it turns into a wrestling match (less heart-melting).
At Cat Behavior Alliance, we know that every multicat home is unique. If your feline crew is struggling to get along, we’re here to help! Book a session with us and let’s bring peace (and purrs) back to your home.
Because a house full of cats should be full of love, not drama. 💛🐾
