The Furry Feline Circus
by Rita Reimers, Multi Cat Behavior Expert
Whether you have 2 or 20, life with multiple cats is never boring. But it can be challenging. Is life with more than one cat right for you? Read ahead to find out what life with multiple felines is really like.

So, you decided to get a second cat. Or a third. Or… wait, how many cats do you have now?
If your home resembles a feline version of the Olympic Games—complete with zoomies, wrestling matches, and the occasional synchronized napping—you might be living proudly in a multi-cat household.
Welcome to the madness of life with multiple cats. Let’s break it down.
1. The Cat Cast System

Every multi-cat home has a hierarchy, and while you may think you’re the boss, let’s be honest—you’re just the underpaid butler. There’s the Overlord Cat, who sits on the highest perch and judges all. The Chaotic Gremlin who knocks everything off shelves at 3 AM.
The Drama Queen who hisses if another cat so much as breathes near them. And, of course, the Introverted Loner, who only appears at mealtime like a shadowy legend.
2. Meal Time = Mayhem

You’d think feeding multiple cats would be simple—just put down some bowls and let them eat, right? Ha! No.

Meal time is a strategic battlefield. One cat will try to eat three portions while another acts like their food is poisoned. Someone will refuse to eat in the same room as their “sworn enemy,” and at least one will demand food from your plate instead.
Pro Tip: When feeding wet food, give each cat their own plate to prevent arguments and food aggression.
3. Litter Box Logistics (or: Why Do I Even Bother?)
The rule is one litter box per cat plus one extra. But let’s be real, they will ALL use the same one and ignore the others. And that one? It will be full approximately 12 seconds after you scoop it. Someone will inevitably decide that the outside of the litter box is just as good as the inside.
Pro Tip: provide one box for each cat, plus one extra. For more information about litter box avoidance: Litter Box Avoidance: 7 Step Solution You Can Do Today!
4. Synchronized Zoomies & Nightly Chaos

Having one cat running through the house at midnight is one thing. Having multiple? That’s a full-fledged thundering herd. They don’t care that you have work in the morning.
They have urgent business—like chasing invisible ghosts, launching off furniture, and having a WWE-style wrestling match in the hallway.

5. Affection on Their Terms

One cat will follow you to the bathroom like a devoted sidekick. Another will act like touching them is a crime punishable by claws.
Some demand attention while you’re working, and others wait until you’re in the most awkward, least petting-friendly position possible. And if you try to pet the wrong cat? Oh, you’ll know.
6. Cat Politics & Ever-Shifting Alliances

One day, two cats are best friends, cuddling and grooming each other. The next day, they act like bitter enemies, with one taking dramatic swipes while the other dramatically flops over as if mortally wounded.
Meanwhile, the third cat is watching from the sidelines, waiting to pick a side like a reality show contestant.
Pro Tip: Feline Non-Recognition Aggression is prevalent in a multi-cat household, but it CAN be avoided.
7. You Wouldn’t Have It Any Other Way

Sure, life with multiple cats is chaos, but it’s the best kind of chaos. There’s always a cute moment, a funny antic, or an adorable cuddle pile waiting to melt your heart. Plus, let’s be honest—you love being outnumbered by tiny furry dictators.
Would you trade it for anything? Nope. Would you still consider adopting one more if the right cat came along? Absolutely.
Because let’s face it—you’re already owned by a small army of cats. What’s one more? 😸
