What Your Cat’s Meow Means

Ever wish your cat could just tell you what they want? Well… they already do!

Cats are constantly talking to us with their meows, chirps, and trills—it’s just that we don’t always understand what they’re saying. Since your cat won’t be learning English anytime soon, it’s up to you to decode their language.

Types of Cat Meows

Fun fact: Adult cats don’t meow at each other—only at humans! (Well, except for mama cats and their kittens.) That means your cat is trying to communicate with you directly.

But what are they saying?

As cat behavior experts, and cat parents, Linda and I have decoded thousands of feline conversations. These are the most common types of meows we’ve come across.

Kitten Mew

That tiny, high-pitched “mew” is adorable—and usually means “I need you!” Kittens use it to call for their moms, and some adult cats revert to it when they want food or attention.

Our late cat Pinky, for example, used to hit me with a sweet little “mew” the second my eyes open in the morning. Translation? Breakfast, human. Now.

When Baby Sweetie Pie came to live here, she chirped at me quite a bit, it was so sweet. She was so young that she immediately identified me as her new mommy.

Welcome Home Meow

If your cat greets you at the door with an enthusiastic “meow meow!” (especially if they’re a talkative breed like a Siamese), congrats—you’ve been claimed again.

This happy chatter, often paired with leg rubs, is your cat’s way of saying, “You’re back! I missed you! Now, where’s my snack?”

Answer-Back Meow

Ever had a conversation with your cat? Some felines love to “talk” back, especially if they associate a particular question with food or attention.

Try it: Ask, “Do you wanna eat?” a few times in a row and see if your cat meows back. If they do—congrats, you now have a chatty dinner companion.

Attention-Seeking Meow

Some cats demand attention like a celebrity on the red carpet. Take my tabby, Mr. Peanut Butter—he’ll hop onto my dresser, meow dramatically, and bow his head for pets.

If I dare ignore him, he follows me around, meowing nonstop until I give in. Sound familiar?

Complaint Meow

This is the Oscar-worthy meow of protest. It’s loud, it’s dramatic, and it means your cat isn’t getting what they want.

My late Sweet Pea would sit in the bathtub and wail for me to turn the faucet on—for hours. Cats are persistent little negotiators, and trust me, they will outlast you.

Help Me Meow

A frantic, high-pitched “mew?” often signals distress. Many years ago, my cat, Inga, got trapped inside a dresser drawer while my then husband and I were at work. When we got home, we heard faint, questioning “mew? mew?” sounds coming from the bedroom.

After following the meows, we rescued her from the drawer just in time. If your cat sounds like they’re asking a question in a panicked voice—check on them ASAP!

Senior Meow

As cats age, they often meow more—sometimes for no apparent reason. If your senior cat suddenly starts vocalizing in empty rooms or at random objects (looking at you, refrigerator), a vet check is a good idea to rule out pain, cognitive decline, or vision loss.
