🧹 5 Simple Rules for Cleaning with Cats Underfoot
by Rita Reimers, Multi Cat Behavior Expert
Ah, spring—the time of year when we suddenly feel inspired to declutter closets, scrub mysterious spots off walls, and finally tackle that junk drawer labeled “misc.”
But if you share your home with a cat, you know one universal truth:
You are never alone during spring cleaning.
🐾 Rule One: Select Your Cleaning Zone

Before you even touch a mop, your cat will appear. Maybe they were sleeping three rooms away.
Doesn’t matter. They have a sixth sense for when boxes are being moved.
🧺 Rule Two: Attempt to Declutter
Cats thrive on “If I fits, I sits” logic. Empty a drawer? That’s now a cat bed. Fold some clothes? They’ll lie directly on the warm laundry.
Toss items into a donation pile? Congratulations, it’s now a napping station.
Pro tip: Label boxes “NOT FOR CAT USE” for reverse psychology.
🧹 Rule Three: Cleaning Surfaces (Good Luck)

That satisfying spray-and-wipe motion is apparently a cat signal for “run across the counter at full speed” to attack your hands.
Also: all dusters = toys. You have been warned.
🚪 Rule Four: Open a Closet Door

Curiosity may not kill the cat, but it will derail your entire schedule.
Cats must inspect every closet you open like they’re on a mission from feline HQ.
Trickery will lure the cats away so you can clean without being interrupted.
Bonus points if they disappear into a pile of winter coats.
😼 Final Rule Five: Accept Defeat Gracefully

You may not finish cleaning your entire house today—but you’ll absolutely get a cat hair tumbleweed to roll across your freshly vacuumed rug.
And isn’t that what spring is really about?
Pro Tip:
Spring cleaning with cats takes twice as long, but it’s twice as entertaining. So grab a lint roller, take a deep breath, and remember: you live with royalty.
You’re just lucky they let you do the dusting.
