Patience and Time Matters in Changing Your Cat’s Behavior

When people schedule a cat behavior session with me, often of the first things people ask me is, “How long is it going to take before I see results?”
My answer is always the same: Expect it to take some time.
Expecting immediate results and perfect behavior after just a day or two of altering your approach to the situation isn’t realistic, although sometimes that does happen.
It’s important to realize this upfront so you don’t get impatient when you’ve been doing everything right, yet a week has gone by and the behavior has not been completely corrected.
Please don’t decide that the cat won’t learn and must be taken to a shelter. I know you are frustrated by inappropriate urination, aggression, furniture scratching, or some other behavior you wish would stop. Let me help you and your cat.
The fact is, cats are very smart and very capable of learning exactly what you want them to do—and what you don’t want them to do. Changing a cat’s behavior to discourage unwanted actions and teach more appropriate ones (note: I never use the word “train”) takes patience and consistency.
If you’re at the point where you’ve tried everything and nothing seems to be working, that’s often when it’s time to schedule a cat behavior session and get a clear, personalized plan.
How Cats Learn: Key Techniques for Behavior Change

Cats learn most effectively using the following techniques:
Rewards: Cats are very food-motivated, and treats are one of the most effective ways to reward desired behavior. Praise can also work, but pairing it with a food reward makes it much more powerful.
Repetition: It’s important to repeat an “action and reward” scenario many times for the association to truly stick.
Consistency: Just like with children, a cat will quickly decide you’re not serious if you aren’t consistent. Clearly communicate what behaviors are not appropriate, and offer acceptable alternatives. Reward those positive behaviors immediately—every time.
When you schedule a cat behavior session with me, you will learn how to apply these techniques to achieve meaningful behavior changes in your cat(s)
The L.U.C.K.Y. C.A.T. Approach

When you schedule a cat behavior session with me, I will help you learn patience while helping your cat learn. I use a proven, compassionate approach to feline behavior based on the principles of that I call The LUCKY CAT:
Love, Understanding, Communication, Kindness, and Consistency with the Time and Attention you give your cat.
I use this approach during every one of my cat behavior sessions. A personalized behavior plan tailored to your cat’s needs, your home, and your specific situation will help you achieve your cat behavior goals.
The Rewards of Patience and Consistency
Your kitty wants to please you, and will often try hard to do just that. However, he needs he understands what you want and expect. You can achieve a happy, loving relationship with your cat with time, patience, and consistency.
You really can have a long life together and enjoy that bond every day.
And if you’re struggling to get there on your own, schedule a cat behavior session. A session with a behaviorist (like me) can help you get the clarity and guidance. Then you need to move forward with confidence and clarity.
